How to prevent the onset of CTLN2 or FTTDCD and worsening of symptoms based on current knowledge :

  • High Protein and lipid, low carbohydrate diet

Patients should go for a diet which is protein-rich and lipid-rich, however low in carbohydrate to prevent hyperammonemia crisis and resolve failure to thrive [Saheki & Kobayashi 2005, Saheki et al 2006, Dimmock et al 2007, Saheki et al 2008, Dimmock et al 2009].

  • MCT supplement could be helpful in reducing the risk of hypoglycemia and reducing the level of blood ammonia as it improves hepatic ATP shortage. It could also potentially improve food preference. (Ostuka et al 2016)

  • Arginine and sodium pyruvate administration may be effective in preventing hyperammonemic crises.
